Greying of Hair
Every time you pull a grey hair, ten more grey hairs will come out – so remember never to pull a grey hair but instead, cut it near the root. Temporary rinses are less in use and not in vogue. Hair dyed with herbs are difficult to set, so people are more inclined towards chemical dyes. These cannot produce drastic changes in hair colour.
In case, you have a lot of grey hair use chemical hair dyes. This is a very popular dyeing method in our country. The dye is more or less permanent and if dyed well, hair looks almost a natural black. Dyes are not affected by the climate, season, water and soap. The dyes are made with chemical like para, hydrogen peroxide and others, and are easily available in the market.
For dyeing, wash your hair clean, remove all grease and apply the dye as per instructions with a brush. Dye leaves a balck colour on fingers and nails which may mar the beauty of hands. So use rubber gloves. Do not apply the dye on the skin of your scalp ( apply on hair only). Let the dye remain on the hair for about an hour, then wash it off with shampoo. Dyeing is to be repeated after a fortnight or so, because when the hair grows, roots start showing grey again. The chemicals used in dyes sometimes causes a reaction on the skin. It may cause a burning sensation immediately after applying or can take up to 48 hours to occur. Reddishness starts with the ears, spreads to the eyes and then the whole face swells. Eczema may also erupt. It is, therefore, advisable to take a skin test by applying some dye behind the ear or the neck where the skin is very sensitive. The test can be done on the inner part of the elbow where the skin is tender. If there is no reaction within 48 hours, go ahead with using the dye. But, there is not guarantee that you are immune to reaction forever. It is better to test every time before the dye is to be used.
In case of a reaction on the skin, consult a doctor and take the prescribed medicine. In order to ward off the ill-effects of para-chemicals, use water with sodium chloride to clean your hair. This mixture is made like this:
Take two litres of water, two tablespoonfuls of sodium chloride and one tablespoonful of hydrogen peroxide. Mix these and wash hair twice a day. It is, however, necessary to consult a doctor in case of any skin abrasion or reaction. If a doctor is not available take one of the following solutions and apply it on the skin with a handkerchief.
Take fresh clean water. Add boric powder to it and apply on the affected part. Another way is to take 10 camomile flowers and put them in boiling water. Strain and apply on the affected skin. Remember, do not dye the hair in case conditions, such as menstruation, pregnancy, asthma, heart problem, kidney trouble, skin diseases, breast-feeding, extremely dry hair or fall of hair prevails. If you feel a burning sensation while dyeing, stop operations immediately and have a skin test.
Premature graying or falling of hair signifies some deficiency of the body. The quality of hair depends upon the general health. A polluted atmosphere, scorching heat, humid climate affects the beauty of the hair adversely. Likewise, tension, anxiety, grief, disease, frustration or brooding are also harmful. To make dry hair look shiny and healthy, try a soft massage with warm oil.
