Common Conditions of Genitalia

Candidiasis or Moniliasis

This is caused by an yeast called Candida. Genital infection is common in uncircumcised males. It usually presents as radial fissures on the prellpucial margin. The inner surface of the prepuce becomes edematous and macerated and shows white flakes. Retraction of the prepuce is difficult and painful and the glans penis is inflamed. In women, candidiasis may not have any symptom. It is very important to note that a large number of normal females in the reprodeuctive age group normally have candida as normal flora of the vagina. Certain factors like the state of pregnancy, diabetes, administration of broad spectrum antibiotics and steroids and also the use of contraceptive pills appear to cause the organism to produce the clinical condition. In women, it produces a white vaginal discharge with intense irritation. There may also be burning micturition.

The treatment consists of the application of ant-fungal preparations to all skin and mucosal surfaces involved to eliminate the fungus while preventing reinfection from the sex partner. Any causative factor mentioned above should be investigated and suitable treatment with the consultation of your doctor institued. The anti-fungal preparations available include nystation (Mycostatin), micanazole (Dactarin), clotrimazole (Clomazole, Imidil) which can be used locally as creams in both males and females. In addition, intravaginally daily for two weeks and six days respectively in females.
